Ten years ago, the ages of the members of a joint family of eight people added up to 231 years. Three years later, one member died at the age of 60 years and a child was born during the same year. After another three years, one more member died, again at 60, and a child was born during the same year. The current average age of this eight-member joint family is nearest to

  1. 21 years
  2. 22 years
  3. 23 years
  4. 24 years

Answer

Ten years ago, sum of ages of 8 people = 231

Seven years ago (three years later), sum of ages = 231 + (8*3) - 60 = 195

Four years ago, sum of ages = 195 + (8*3) - 60 = 159

At present, sum of ages = 159 + (8*4) = 191

Average = 191/8 = 24 (approx)

Alternatively, in 10 years, 2 persons died at 60 years of age. Every year, age of person increased by 1, so in 10 years total 80 years was increased.

Sum of ages at present = 231 - (2*60) + 80 = 191

The correct option is D.
